Glycyrrhiza glabra Liquorice is a perennial legume with mauve, pea-like flower spikes appearing mid-summer. It prefers well drained soil in full sun to part shade. Liquorice grows to 1.5m tall and spreads approx. 1.5m wide via underground stolons and dies back in winter. It's then that the 2+ year old rootstock are harvested and dried for use. Always leave some roots to establish new plants. Liquorice has a anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti- arthritic effect. It has a reputation for healing ulcers, lowering stomach acid and indigestion.
