Allium schoenoprasum

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Chives will grow almost anywhere but thrive in full sun. Keep the soil moist and mulched. Divide the clump every 3-4 years.

Chives are a perennial plant related to onion, garlic, leeks and shallots. Their delicate flavour is well suited to cheeses, eggs and potatoes. Sprinkle a handful over salads. The plants reshoot each Spring and are cut as required. Cut at ground level to encourage reshooting. All parts of the plant are edilble, including the flowers.

They grow well in containers.

Chives are often planted among apple orchards to prevent apple scab.

Chives are rich source of vitamin K, C and folic acid and minerals such as manganese, magnesium and iron.
